Atoms, Stars & Oxygen

Transcript:

So here's a fun fact. If you count the number of atoms in your body, it turns out that the number of atoms in your body are a million times larger in number compared to all the visible stars in the universe. That's an amazing stat: a million times. The number of atoms in our body are a million times larger than all the stars that we can see in the visible universe. That's the first thing.

The second one is that we call ourselves a carbon-based species. We call ourselves a carbon-based species. But if you look at which element is the most abundant in the body in terms of mass, turns out it's oxygen. Oxygen is 45 kilograms in a normal human body. Carbon, by comparison, is only 15 kilograms.

Yet, we call ourselves a carbon-based species — something to think about.
