Changing Titles in Relationships
Transcript:
Hi! So I'm from the region of Maharashtra in India, and we speak the language called Marathi. And in Marathi, an interesting pattern emerges when you look at the names you are called in certain relationships.
For example, my wife's brother's son — my wife's brother's son would call my wife "Atya," and he would call me "Kaka." Now, my wife's sister's daughter — my wife's sister's daughter would call her "Maushi," and I would be called "Kaka." So far, so good.
My brother's son would call me "Kaka" and would call my wife "Kaku." The only time it changes is this one — my sister's daughter would call me "Mama" and would call my wife "Mami."
So each time, my wife's designation keeps changing — from Atya to Maushi to Mami to Kaku — except I remain Kaka all the time, except when I am being made Mama by my sister's kids. So the only time a Kaka becomes a Mama is from my sister's side.
Pretty interesting. Bye!
