Food Waste
Transcript:
According to the World Wildlife Foundation, 40% of the food that is produced in the world never gets eaten. This is a staggering statistic — 40%.
Take the smallest currency of your country and make a stack of 100 of them. So in US dollars, I take one dollar bill, I make a stack of 100 one dollar bills, I take the top 40 of them and burn it. That is the impact of the wastage of food; it's simply colossal.
I thought I was not part of the 40% till I took a hard look at how food gets processed in my house. I buy food for the whole week, groceries, and I put them in the fridge, and then some of them get forgotten, and they go directly from the fridge into the trash can. It is staggering. Do what you can; take a hard look at how you're processing groceries in your house.
Also, in the grocery store, there is a shelf on which produce is marked down. That produce is ready to be eaten tomorrow. Buy that; there's nothing wrong with that produce. Buy it; it is marked down. So if you don't buy it, it's going into the trash can.
Do what you can, please. 40% — we have to get that number down really low. Bye!
