Friction

Transcript:

Everything that we do in the physical world is enabled because of friction.

The only reason I can pick up this cup is because there is friction between my fingers and the surface of the cup. The only reason I can walk is because there is friction between the soles of my shoes and the floor. Cars move because of friction. When two surfaces come together, the more engagement there is, the higher the friction.

Why is a bread knife serrated? Do you know why a bread knife has teeth on it? Because when you bake bread, the crust of the bread is hard and smooth. You need the serrations of the knife to increase the engagement so that the friction increases, and that's how the knife cuts the bread.

Interestingly, this relationship between more engagement resulting in more friction also applies to the mind. Maharishi Patanjali, thousands of years ago, when he expounded his Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, that was his keen insight. Engagement of the mind with the outside world is frictional, which is why vruttis are formed. It's pretty interesting.
