Global Warming, Part 2of2
Transcript:
The process of using that energy, we had only converted it to heat, it would not be such a big deal because the Earth would have radiated that heat back to outer space. What we did was, when we extracted this energy, we converted it to carbon dioxide and methane. And those gas molecules are now sitting in the atmosphere.
So now what is happening is — the remainder of the energy that is not being converted to chemical, it has been heating the surface of the Earth. When that energy is being radiated by the Earth as infrared, these extra CO₂ and methane molecules trap that energy. That infrared energy is trapped by these molecules, and it is being prevented from going back to outer space. This is what is causing global warming.
And it is clearly happening because humans have tapped into fossil fuels and made more CO₂ and methane. Unless we undo that, global warming is not a problem. So now the problem is — how do you remove these CO₂ and methane molecules from the atmosphere? That is the thing we have to solve.
