Listen to Respond or Understand?

Transcript:

Do you listen to understand, or do you listen to respond? There is a difference between these two listening. Pictorially, this is the difference: in the case of listening to respond, you don't really take anything in. You don't imbibe what is being said. You simply reject everything. You take the little bit of stuff in that enables you to give a response.

On the other side, listening to understand means you take everything in and you imbibe it and then you be with it for some time and then you understand what is being said and then you respond. Understanding does not mean agreeing. If you understand what is being said, it doesn't mean that you necessarily agree with what is being said. But once you understand, you can frame the thing back saying, "Okay, this is what I understood and here is my response to it."

But unless you frame it that this is what I understood, you're simply listening to respond. This is very important. It's obvious in social media comments; most people are only listening to respond.
