The 8 Superpowers

Transcript:

In chapter 3, verse 45 of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, Maharshi Patanjali describes this advanced meditation technique called Sanyam. When Sanyam is done on the elements in their subtle, generic, and gross form, mastery over the elements is attained. The result of this mastery leads to eight superpowers. He describes these eight superpowers in the next sutra, 3.46.

Interestingly, each of the superheroes that we have become so familiar with has one of these superpowers. For example, Maharshi Patanjali says the ability to become as small as possible is attained — this is Ant-Man. The ability to become lighter than air is attained — this is Superman. The ability to become as big as you want is attained — this is the Hulk. The ability to have infinite extensions of all your limbs is attained — this is Plastic Man. And there are four more. You can look them up.

But there is only one man in the entire philosophy that has attained all the eight superpowers. That is Hanu Man. Not "Hanu Man" — Hanuman. Hanuman, the character in the Ramayana, is the only person with mastery over all elements, and all the eight superpowers manifest in him. It's amazing.
