The Additional Month

Transcript:

So this month that is going on is called Adhikmas. Adhikmas means an additional month. It is usually added to the lunar calendar.

It is because there are slight differences in the time periods. Like there is a time period of the Earth revolving around the Sun. That is one time period. Then, there is a time period of the Earth rotating around its own axis. That's the second time period. Then, there is another time period of the Moon revolving around the Earth. That's the third time period.

And these time periods are not integral multiples of each other. So there is a remainder. So, if you divide one by the other, it's not a whole number. It's a fraction. So those fractions need to be kept track of so that at the end of one whole year, all these fractions should be eliminated. So, the new year starts with no remainder.

So when you follow this logic, in the lunar calendar you have to add an additional month. It's called Adhikmas. When you follow the solar calendar, every four years, you have to add an additional day called the leap year.

So, these additional months are added between the lunar calendar and the solar calendar just because the various time periods are not an integral multiple of each other.

It's pretty interesting.
