Water is the next Oil

Transcript:

So, water is going to be the next resource crunch that the planet is facing: fresh water.

Turns out that there is a million cubic kilometers of fresh water below the ocean floor.

And how do people know this? Electromagnetic waves, when they are directed back, directed down to the ocean floor; the reflected signal differs between if the signal is reflected from rocks that contain salt water versus rocks that contain fresh water. That's how people know that there is a million cubic kilometers of fresh water below the surface of the ocean.

Just as a comparison, New York City uses 1.4 cubic kilometers of water per year. 1.4 cubic kilometers per year. There is a million cubic kilometers below the surface of the ocean.

And this water is within a hundred kilometers from the shore. So it's readily accessible. Literally, we're gonna have to drill into the ocean floor to get fresh water.

Water is going to be the next oil.
