A Locked Car.

So here's a question: How many children die in the United States due to excessive heat when left in a locked car? You'd think that this is bizarre, but this is a true thing that happens. Turns out that there are 37 children that die every year for the past 20 years. This number has been constant at 37. Thirty-seven children die due to excessive heat in a locked car. You'd think that over the years this number would go down, but it doesn't. And here's why: because people don't realize how quickly a locked car can get heated up. This graphic shows it.
The second reason is there are two modes that the brain functions on. One is actively paying attention to what is being done. And second is on muscle memory, doing reflexive action. While the child is put in the car and the seat belt is attached, etc., the active paying attention part of the mind is working. But when the driver sits behind a wheel and starts driving, the reflexive action part of the brain kicks in, and then the active memory part is pushed to the background. And then the child is simply forgotten. The driver goes out and locks the car. It's quite sad.
