Dark Oxygen

Transcript:

So, the prevalent thought of how we got oxygen, or we keep getting oxygen on earth, is that the oxygen is generated via photosynthesis. And predominantly, it's not the trees on land but it's the algae and the plankton in the oceans that generate the oxygen.

There's a new source of oxygen, it's called “dark oxygen.” And this happens because, on the seabed floor, there are these polymetallic nodules and these nodules when they are closely in touch with each other they act like a battery and they generate sufficient potential to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen. And that source is called dark oxygen and it's called dark because it doesn't happen due to photosynthesis. Pretty interesting!
