Enhanced Rock Weathering

Transcript:

So, have you heard of enhanced rock weathering? Now, this is a technique where rock dust, specifically basalt, is spread over fields and then crops are planted. And in the process of doing this, the basalt removes CO2 from the atmosphere. And this is a four-year-old idea. At least it was published four years earlier. I read it here. And I must say, I was quite skeptical about this. I said it can't be this easy. But it turns out that it does have some merit.

So over four years, it turns out that compared to an untreated plot of farm versus a basalt-enhanced plot of farm, the basalt rock removed 10 metric tons of CO2 per year. This is not insignificant. Additionally, the crop yields were between 12 and 16 percent higher than untreated farmland. So this could be a low-hanging fruit to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

And basalt rock comes as a free byproduct from mining. Mining already has tons of basalt rock that is produced. So, this is an interesting idea.
