Eye-Ear Disconnect.
Transcript:
There's two important functions that the human body has to do almost continuously. One is to maintain balance, and the other is to recognize the true vertical, which means direction of gravity. And both of these super important functions are done in the inner ear.
Balance comes from the semicircular canals of the inner ear, and the otolith organs in the ear are responsible for gravity. The secondary perception of these two things—balance and true vertical comes—from the vision. And when these two signals, the one from the inner ear and one from the eye, when these two don't agree with each other, disorientation happens.
And the most amazing use of this phenomenon of disorientation I saw when I visited Santa Clara. There is a spot called mystery spot. It's an amazing place to go. I won't spoil it for you by telling you what happens, but go there and you will see that they have used these two things—visual disconnect versus inner ear signal disconnect—to disorient you in clever ways.
