The way the mind works is that it projects forward and it verifies. It projects forward and it verifies. It projects forward and it verifies. And when the projected thing does not match with the verified thing, it unlatches. And the state that it reaches when it unlatches is a state of wonder, joy; there is a smile on the face, happiness, and laughter. This is how the mind works, and this is the mechanism of understanding or getting a joke.

The mind is projecting forward as the joke is being told, and when the punchline is delivered, it is totally not expected. It does not match the projected thing from the mind. And this is why the "ha ha ha" that comes out as a joke. The unlatching of the mind is the key.

And it's the same mechanism in understanding spirituality also. The unlatching of the mind is the key to even understanding spirituality. Which is why spiritual teachers like Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar or many other teachers, they interlace their talks with jokes because they are prepping the mind to unlatch. And when the mind is prepped to unlatch, the spiritual discourse—the realization—happens at a deep level.
