Modulo Math & Yoga Asanas
Transcript:
A couple of years ago, I was in conversation with my good friend Sriram Sarvottam, and we were discussing all things yoga. And Sriram told me an interesting thing. He said that people can use modulo arithmetic to count multiple sets of asanas.
For example, if you had four asanas that you want to repeat three times—you want to do three sets of four asanas—what you can do is come up with a combination of three chants which you repeat, one chant per asana in sequence. And then when the first chant repeats with the first asana, it will be an integral multiple.
For example, for four asanas repeating three times, you can come up with a set of three mantras: A, B, C. And then each time you do asana one, you chant A. Two, B. Three, C. Four, A. Like this you keep going, and next time, if one and A correspond, it will be a multiple of three. Do it. It's pretty cool.
Now here's—this was easy. Four, three, twelve—these are all easy numbers. Do this now for Surya Namaskar. If you have 12 asanas which you want to repeat 108 times, what is the mantra set that you need so that when you do this modulo math, it will repeat for 108 times? Set of 12 asanas, 108 times. Let me know.
