On Understanding!!
Transcript:
There's a difference between reading about something or listening to something and understanding it. What is the difference? The difference is, unless you put in the hard work—unless you put in the hard work—you will never understand.
For example, look at the Schrödinger equation. Now, this is simply a snapshot from Wikipedia. Just look at it. Now, unless you apply yourself and actually solve it, you will not notice the beauty in it. For example, why is there the i? Why is the complex number there in the Schrödinger? Why is the h divided by 2 pi? Why is it h cross? Can you find analytical solutions to it? No, there's only one analytical solution. It's the harmonic—it's the harmonic oscillator. Everything else is numerical.
Knowing all that we know about orbitals, can you now take the Schrödinger and solve it to get the shape of the s orbital, or the p orbital, or the d orbital? Have you done the hard work? If you have not done the hard work, you've not understood anything.
